Since the Covid-19 pandemic upended many of our lives, online therapy has become an increasingly popular option for individuals seeking therapy. As a trauma therapist specializing in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), I often get questions from potential clients about the effectiveness of online therapy, especially when it comes to trauma treatment. One common concern is whether EMDR—a well-established, trauma-focused therapy—can be effectively conducted virtually. In short, online therapy can be just as effective as face-to-face therapy, and EMDR can be conducted virtually in a safe and effective manner. In this post, I’ll discuss the effectiveness of online therapy and explain how EMDR can be safely conducted via virtual platforms, so you can feel confident in your decision to pursue therapy online.
Online therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy, and EMDR can be done virtually in a safe and effective way.
When it comes to trauma treatment, EMDR is a widely recognized and highly effective approach. It involves a specific set of protocols to help process traumatic memories, reduce emotional distress, and integrate healing experiences. I've had clients wonder if EMDR can be performed effectively in an online setting, and in my experience it absolutely can be with the right environment and resources, and of course a good internet connection.

So, how does it work?
Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) Can Be Effectively Delivered Virtually. EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation (BLS), such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, to help the brain process traumatic memories. For virtual EMDR, this can be easily adapted to online platforms. For example, I use a website that can be customized to create eye movements and pair it with auditory BLS. For more info see https://www.bilateralstimulation.io/. I've also facilitated client's doing their own BLS using tapping, and I've also facilitated eye movements using a wand (a replica Elder Wand just in case you're curious!).
Emotional Regulation and Safety in Virtual Sessions. A key component of successful EMDR therapy is ensuring that clients feel safe and regulated during the process. Through the use of screen sharing and interactive tools, clients can be guided through grounding techniques, resource development (RDI), and other preparation exercises, all while being in the comfort of their own safe space. This can actually enhance the therapeutic experience, as clients can feel more comfortable in their familiar environment, and can have more resources surrounding them including pets!
Maintaining Therapeutic Connection. I truly believe the therapeutic alliance is essential for the success of any therapy, including EMDR. As a trauma therapist, I work hard to create a safe, supportive, and empathetic environment online.
Client Control and Comfort. For many individuals with trauma histories, control and comfort are key factors in the healing process. Online therapy can empower clients to create their own safe environment for therapy, whether that’s sitting in their living room, a quiet office, or a peaceful outdoor space. This level of autonomy can make the therapeutic process feel more manageable and less intimidating.

Why Virtual Therapy and EMDR Are Beneficial for Trauma Healing
Accessibility. Online therapy allows people who live in remote areas or face physical, geographical, or logistical barriers to easily access high-quality trauma therapy. It also makes it easier for people who may feel uncomfortable with traditional in-person therapy to seek help.
Convenience. The convenience of online therapy means that clients are more likely to follow through with appointments, adhere to treatment plans, and stay consistent with their therapy. This is crucial for effective trauma treatment, especially with EMDR, where consistency and commitment are key to progress.
Confidentiality and Comfort. Some clients may feel more comfortable discussing sensitive topics like trauma when they’re in a private, familiar environment. Virtual therapy allows clients to create a safe space where they feel in control, which can lead to deeper emotional processing and healing.
The Power of Bilateral Stimulation in a Virtual Setting. As mentioned earlier, bilateral stimulation (a core part of EMDR) can be effectively delivered in a virtual setting, making online EMDR just as powerful as in-person sessions. Whether through eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, the therapeutic effect of BLS remains intact in an online format.
Conclusion
Online therapy is not just a convenient option—it’s a highly effective one. Studies show that online therapy produces similar results to in-person therapy for a wide range of mental health issues, including trauma, depression, and anxiety. EMDR, in particular, is a powerful trauma treatment that can be effectively adapted for virtual sessions, making it a safe and viable option for those seeking trauma recovery in the comfort of their own home.
