Addiction
Understanding Addictions and Their Impact
Addictions, whether they involve substances or behaviors such as sex, pornography, or self-harm, can create significant challenges in life. They can disrupt relationships, hinder personal growth, and lead to feelings of shame and isolation. Addressing an addiction is a courageous step, and we recognize that the journey to recovery is often complex and deeply personal.
Addictions frequently develop as a means of coping with overwhelming emotions, often rooted in trauma or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). Trauma and addiction are closely linked, with many individuals turning to addictive behaviors as a defense mechanism to numb or escape from painful memories and feelings. Understanding this connection is key to providing effective, compassionate care that addresses both the addiction and the underlying trauma.
Our Trauma-Informed Approach to Addiction
Mountain Heart Counseling takes a trauma-informed approach to treating addictions, recognizing the deep-seated connections between trauma and addictive behaviors. We believe in creating a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore the roots of your addiction and begin the healing process.
We understand that overcoming addiction is a journey, one that requires patience, resilience, and support. Our approach is designed to help you develop healthier coping mechanisms, reduce the hold of addiction on your life, and address the trauma that may be contributing to your struggles.
Using DBT and EMDR to Treat Addictions
We incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, particularly those related to Distress Tolerance, to help you manage urges and reduce reliance on addictive behaviors. DBT provides practical tools to navigate the emotional turbulence that often accompanies addiction, helping you build resilience and regain control over your life.
In addition to DBT, we may use specialized EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) protocols, such as the DeTur protocol, to address addiction.
DeTur Protocol: The DeTur (Desensitization of Triggers and Urge Reprocessing) protocol is an EMDR-based approach designed specifically to reduce the urges associated with addictive behaviors. It uses Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), such as eye movements or taps, to process and reframe the triggers that lead to addictive urges. By addressing these triggers at a deeper level, the DeTur protocol can help decrease the intensity and frequency of urges, making it easier to resist the pull of addiction.
